Chapter 7
The Waitress
Rebecca had a full day of work at the library ahead of her to prepare what she wanted to say when she got to The Catch of the Day. She couldnât be sure but hoped Molly would be working; that was a variable out of her control. The second unknown was how busy the restaurant would be. If they were slammed, she wouldnât be able to chat at all. âWhat are we going to do today?â she cooed to Joey and Bean. They did figure-eights through her legs when she reached the bottom of the stairs. âI may be out late again tonight, so I should treat you to an extra special breakfast.â Rebecca strode to the cabinet to get containers of wet food. She didnât often give them treats, and wet food in the morning was a treat, but she was feeling pretty guilty about how much she was gone already this week. Bean practically climbed up her legs as she walked over to the food dishes. âWell, you two will have to play nice while I am out.â The two cats happily devoured their treats while Rebecca packed up a lunch and made her way out the front door.
She piled her bag, lunch and laptop onto the front seat of the green Subaru. The trusty hatchback wasnât going to catch anyoneâs attention, but it didnât come with a car payment and was reliable in the winter; the latter was much more important. She drove to the library where she loaded everything back into her arms before approaching the door to enter. Balancing it all in one arm now, she unlocked the front door and closed it behind her with her foot. The bag and laptop were deposited on the curved check-out desk while she wandered into the office to store her lunch in the mini fridge. In her haste to leave last night, it appeared that she had left the office computer on. That lack of attention to detail was not like her. Clearly, this investigation was distracting her from real responsibilities. The death of her high school friend would be taken care of by the police, including her current and close friend Kenny. She couldnât allow herself to give less than her best to her actual job.
The time passed slowly, and she checked her phone repeatedly to see if anyone, Kenny especially, might text her with new information or at least a projected date for pizza â not-date for pizza. No texts and very few patrons made for another long shift. Rebecca decided to change the end cap near the front door to feature mystery authors. Agatha Christie was an obvious choice, but she spent a long time adding books by Dan Brown, Louise Penny, John Grisham, P.D. James, Thomas Harris and Stieg Larsson. When she chose which books to feature, she looked for the book that had been taken out the fewest times by each author and placed it next to the book the author was most famous for.
